On January 1, 2022, the College of Opticians of Alberta (COA) was formally established.

The legislated mandate of the COA remains the same: to protect the public by overseeing the licensing and practice of opticianry in the province. However, the COA no longer advocates on behalf of the profession or offers programs and services for opticians.
